Romans 8:15 NASB
For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
Romans 8:23 NASB
And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
Romans 9:4 NASB
who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises,
Galatians 4:4-7 NASB
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
Ephesians 1:5 NASB
He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,
The Mother of God
It’s clear from the above quotes, from St. Paul, that we become adopted sons and daughters of God. Each of these verses from St. Paul refers to us as adopted into the family of God. We are not of the family of God from birth. It is through adoption that we become children of God. No question about the plain texts here.
We become convenanted into Gods family as adopted sons and daughters by our baptism as St. Paul tells us in Romans 6:4:
Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
I’ve come across several people who say that they regard Mary, the Mother of God, as just another sister in Christ. Wow…….
Let’s look at a verse from Luke which may shed some light on this error.
And how has it happened to me, that the Mother of my Lord would come to me?
Luke does make it clear that Mary is the Mother of my Lord and not an adopted daughter in any way, shape or form. We are adopted, not her. The Holy Spirit inspired Word of God says Mary is the Mother of my Lord. Any Jewish person back in the time of Jesus would understand that my Lord is a reference to GOD. Luke doesn’t say she is an adopted Mother of my Lord or God in the same sense that we are adopted Sons and Daughters. Neither does he say she is incorporated into the family of God like we are by Grace, through Faith.
As the Angel Gabriel says in Luke 1:30-31 –
30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
Mary found favor with God. God foreknew and predestined her to be the Mother of the 2nd Person of the Holy Trinity. She was predestined from the beginning of time, before the foundation of the world, to be the Mother of God. And God found favor with this young virgin, who He called and he justified and glorified her and this is why she can say God my Savior.
Biblical Evidence for predestination of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God
15 But when God, who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with flesh and blood,…
Here we have St. Paul informing us the he was also set apart before he was born to be the Apostle to the Gentiles. And this is exactly why the Angel Gabriel can say to Mary “Hail, full of Grace.” Mary, the Mother of God was chosen by God, before she was born, because of her deep reverence for God, her Savior. The Church does not claim and never has claimed that Mary is Eternally Begotten, as God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are Eternally Begotten.
If we look at Luke 1:44-45, it is completely clear to us that the Lord the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth is referring to is the Lord God.
44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
Luke 1:45 tells us that it is the Lord thy God who has fulfilled what was spoke of at the Annunciation and what is accomplished at the Incarnation.
Original Sin – Under the dominion of the Prince of this World
She could not have been born with original sin otherwise Satan could have taunted Jesus, saying that His Mother was at one time subject to him. And Yes, Jesus is also her Savior because He chose her to be His mother from the beginning. She recognizes this when she proclaims her lowliness before witnesses and she says that all will call her blessed. What grace she received her whole life from God, her Savior. I believe she was preserved from all sin throughout her entire life.
She and her earthly spouse, Joseph, were entrusted with the upbringing of the Savior of the world. She and Joseph both nurtured Jesus so that He continued to grow in wisdom and in stature. This is no accident.
She is not a sister in Christ, like any other believer. For someone to say this, they would be elevating themselves before their God; which is the exact opposite of what Mary said in the Magnificat.
No sword pieces our heart like it did Mary’s heart. No sword on God’s good earth can do to us what it did to her. She is a witness to the Incarnation, the Passion, Death and Resurrection of the Son of God, who she knew was going to give himself for the world.
Mother of God (The Theotokos) intercede on my behalf before the Lord, that the ugly and bad fruit that so many have sown against such a beautiful soul as yours, that they may come to understand that sword of sorrow that pieced you that day. I lower them through the roof into Jesus’ hear and beg forgiveness on their behalf, for every single word they have uttered against your lovingkindness. Please intercede for them on my behalf.
I ask this through Christ our Lord.
